"A voyage between the covers of this exacting piece of literary brilliance will render the reader cognizant of coal dust, cuspidors and a class-conscious Edwardian world now all as extinct as the mastodon. The result is a cohesive, flowing pagent of seagoing architectural history."
"Mark Warren has greatly added to our understanding of passenger ships. His new Shipbuilder series Volume 1 is a treasury of information, photos, folding plans and even advertisements. And it is a glorious cavalcade of illustrious names -- from the first Mauretania to the Empress of Russia - in a superbly produced book that should be in the library of every true passenger ship enthusiast and historian."
"Thank you again for the excellent and priceless gift you have given all ship enthusiasts. It is my best single book!"
"An authentic replication to the smallest detail of the best of The Shipbuilder magazine, 1906-1914, including articles on the Titanic, Olympic, Lusitania, and Mauretania. This encyclopedic collection contains original text, photographs, and advertisements, as well as 22 fold-out blueprint plans, five color plates, a two-color Titanic cutaway folding advertisement and even two facsimile subscription forms. "Ships covered include: Empress of Ireland, Oriana, Oronsa, Volturno, Falaba, Amazon, Araguaya, Avon, Adriatic, President Lincoln, Lusitania, Mauretania, California, Rotterdam, Lapland, George Washingon, Laurentic, Megantic, Edinburgh Castle, Garth Castle, Balmoral Castle, Storstad, Galway Castle, Nomadic, Traffic, Zeelandic, Cameronia, Olympic, Titanic, France, Carmania, Paul LeCat, Reina Victoria-Eugenia, Ascania, Alaunia, Empress of Russia, Empress of Asia, Ceramic, Missanabie, Metagama."
"It is a wonderful book to be remembered and appreciated by liner lovers around! I love it!"
"The quality of these books is superb and of higher quality than other books. The quality of the printing is great. I have, over the years, seen many of the reproductions of the Olympic, but these are so clear and I can see more detail than before. It is a great testament to you for your hard work in putting these books together."
"This is the short of it... If I had to burn my books to stay alive, this would be the last one I would burn."
"Absolutely the best reprint I have ever seen! Mark Warren was the editor of the reprints from The Shipbuilder published some years back by Patrick Stephens, but never entirely happy with the reproduction, decided to publish a series of reprints himself, and this is the first result. Using the most modern computer scanning methods, here you have a whole selection of articles, and advertisements from copies of The Shipbuilder from 1906 to 1914, reassembled to the style of the original. Everything about the book is a delight, because Mark Warren has gone to great lengths to match or improve on the original. The 228 pages on heavyweight paper are a delight, but you also have to take into account the additional 23 foldout plans, 5 colour plates of the Mauretania as well as the 185 photographs and 37 pages of advertisements. The photographs are extraordinary – each has been computer scanned and reprinted at 4000 dots per inch with the result that they are very clear and sharp – far superior to the originals. The accuracy is of such a high order that the book includes two Subscription Order Forms in the original thin paper! 39 ships and 2 tenders are covered, including Titanic and Olympic, Mauretania and Lusitania, Empress of Ireland, France, Laurentic, Megantic and Carmania. I cannot really describe just how good this book is – buy a copy; you will not regret it! Hardbound. Blue Riband Publications. (Vol. 2 should be out during the life of this list. 314 pages, 20 folding plans covering 51 famous ships from 1907 to 1914. Anticipated price £ 61.95 plus postage – let us know if you want to be advised when it is available)."
"The book is produced to a very high standard. It is paginated from 1 to 228. The 176 pages of text from The Shipbuilder retain the layout and type, which is clear and easy to read. The 145 black and white photographs are splendid. Computer techniques have improved on the originals, and the pictures have been printed on glossy, high quality paper. The illustrations provide a valuable record of the several stages of construction, launching, interior design, equipmental form and décor. They deserve prolonged, careful study. The inclusion of advertisements adds to the value of the work. A wide range of products is illustrated, from the 21-light candelabras lighting the main staircase of the Olympic and Titanic, to the door fastenings, ormolu electric light fittings, "luxurious" mattresses, India rubber deck tiling, mica boiler lagging, and anchor chains which testify to the extent, and the diverse nature of the industries supported by shipbuilding… "Mr. Warren is to be congratulated on producing a praiseworthy first volume of what promises to be a series. Volume 2 will cover 52 vessels built between 1907 and 1914. Together with Mr. Warren’s previous publications which include the specialist studies of Lusitania, Mauretania, Aquitania, and other ships, these works will provide a thorough description, magnificently illustrated, of the physical form, naval architecture, equipment, and décor of the major liners of the early 20th century before World War I, as reported in The Shipbuilder. "This excellent book is strongly recommended to members of the Newcomen Society. It is hoped that the example set by Mr. Warren will be followed by other editors to deal with other branches of engineering as he has done for shipbuilding."
